My favorite involves the GS4 pulling the freedom train somewhere in the southwest. They topped off the amtrak diesel and the GS4 before a torturous climb up a mountain pass and through a tunnel. Half way up the diesel started to balk and the engineer radio ed the GS4 they were about to die and pour the oil to the GS4. Turns out they gave the diesel the #6 oil for the steamer. They exited the tunnel with pops lifted and fifty years of carbon in a huge cloud around the engine. Apparently the common reaction was staring in amazement with few if any pictures gotten of the incident. She never even slipped once.

ACY
Thanks for the memory. Tom P.S.  Did they pick up a diesel helper at Akron Junction and go for it again?

Hi, Tom

I wish that was MY video but it was one of the first that came up when I searched "steam working uphill" on Youtube. I would guess that they did get some helpers but can't say for sure.

At the time I was busy on the C&TV with the 4070. I was on one of the 2102 trips on the AC&Y was it Medina to Carey? 1973? A friend of mine, Doug Fink worked in the car shop at Brittain Yard.

I knew it was a long shot, and no I can't remmender anything else. PM Railfan's video looks a great deal like the location, but it's hard to tell from a screen shot. The sound is also bad. If you have the original that would be great.

Thanks one and all.

(now THAT my friends, is how you run a railroad!)

DITTO!

Wow, 31 cars! And one of them a 224,000 lb. Super Dome! Amen!

Ed

And you notice no stinking safety cab diesel behind her either! And just to keep the blood flowing here is another most excellent video.... this time, you get to hear an actual working booster! (and still, no diesel!)

SPOILER ALERT: your gonna feel alot of string pulling on your underdog spirit in this one, but ofcourse, you cant beat a Berkshire!

(i checked this to make sure the link works and someone has replaced this video with some cheap a$$ home recording of a tv playback. If you want to see the video in full size let me know. you can still hear the booster, but if you cant tell which loco it is, its C&O 2716 when she wore that bastardized SR scheme. Enjoy!)

Ed ---

I'm pretty sure the 614 video was shot in Akron, at the Evans Avenue crossing, on the eastbound ruling grade between Willard and New Castle.  Back in the 1950's, I was a kid, living about a mile from that location.  On quiet summer evenings, B&O steam engines would sing me to sleep as they worked that grade (with steam helpers).

Thanks for the memory.

Tom

Is there ANY more info you can give, your request is certainly very vague. It could be any video of any loco pulling any passenger train. Location? region? country? loco type? livery? roadname? excursion or old service? anything would help. Theres only a million of these type videos out there. Mostly on Youtube I would summize.

Try this link in the meantime. It pretty much epitomizes what steam and passenger trains should be like....

Hey Guys

Some time ago there was Viedo clip of a steamer that was pulling a passenger consist up a winding incline. The old girl was really barking, does anyone remember the clip or where to find it?

I wanted to save it but forgot to.

Thank.   Sigh
