The photo I am looking at is a Trinity built 4750 car. I found another photo and it appears to say the following:
36 1W WHT ??ALLOY SPRING ???6-D5 OUTER7-D5 INNERBABBER S-2-?WITH ? PE??? 901 E ?????
Can anyone clarify the question marks or correct the rest of the text? I suspect that the fifth line should be "BARBER S-2" followed by something else. There is wheel splatter along the right side of the text.
maxman "If you can read this, you're following too close"?
"If you can read this, you're following too close"?
I love it!

On the AAR 40 ft box cars I redesign, I make end decals which read:
COR-TEN STEEL
3 11/64 SPRING TRAVEL
I/W/WROT STEEL WHEELS
These labels are generally centered above the coupler housing, on or between end ribs, either in black or white, depending on the car body color.
I am sure there are variations of the above labels, but I pulled mine from researched actual images in Railpictures Archives.

The first line starts with "36 1W," a reference to 36 inch "one wear" wheels. Beyond that the rest is hard to read, even if I paste the image into another program and try to adjust the contrast.
The car looks like a 4750 cu. ft. arched-roof hopper, and has a Trinity builder's plate. I'm unaware of any models of this car produced in any scale, so there may not be commercial decals available to match. Trinity also built near-clones of the Pullman 4750 design, so if you could find decal sheets for those cars there's a possibility the small lettering would be available, or at least something close.
Here's a reference sheet on arched roof/clerestory covered hoppers that may be of some help identifying similar cars and manufacturers http://fcix.info/ref_sheets/ref007.pdf .

from the little I was able to gather from them ... looks like it might be related to the brakes. hard to tell without messing around with the contrast a bit to see if some letters can be made out though ...
On most ribbbed covered hoppers there is text on the verticle end panels that describes the wheels and axles that the car is equipped with. Usually it is centered justified on the center of the panel. On the car pictured below (in the links) the text is left justified and on the right side of the panel.

The text can not be read from the pictures but it does appear different than the normal text. Does anyone know what it actually says?
I like to model the cars that are not commercially available and I like to be as accurate as possible.
