Lahaina, Kaanapali & Pacific R.I.P.

I have just read some very disturbing news regarding the Lahaina, Kaanapali & Pacific Railroad (aka The Sugar Cane Train) on Maui, HI.
Today, August 1, 2014 will be the last day of operation after 45 years.
Apparently it was a financial decision made by the owners last month.
Whenever I went to Maui I always made it a point to ride the train. My last visit was in the spring of 2013. By then the schedule had been reduced to weekdays and the ride was extremely rocky. I guess the economy has had a real impact on HI tourism. Walking around the nearby shopping district of Lahaina I was dismayed to see so many boarded up stores. I wonder what will become of the engines and rolling stock not to mention the Lahaina station and turntable.
