Weathering an Athearn ACF 2970
Posted by FRRYKid on Saturday, June 7, 2014 1:25 AM

I need help from the forums again. This time I need to weather an NP version of the above referenced hopper. The prototypes were used to carry cement for the Dworshak Dam.

I managed to find a prototype picture: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=3193823. My question is this: What would be right color paint(s) to weather my hopper to something close to the picture? As taken, the car has been around a little too long for my era, but I want to use a few ideas from the car for my hopper. Any assistance that can be provided would be welcomed.

I would use some raw umber mixed with a dark grey paint. And some white to bleach the sides.

Looking at the picture, I would do a black wash (wash using diluted ink or black paint).

Gidday, I’m a bit late but your post spurred me to have a go weathering one of my 1950s cement hoppers. I’ve been experimenting with water colour washes, black, grey, white, and brown. I need More practice, but the good thing is that I can easily wash off my mistakes with water.
Have Fun,

Cheers, the Bear.
