Alex,
Well I spent about an hour, looking through and reading the click-able links that are all over that site and my conclusion is that the Terminal Railroad, run all over the NYC Railroad rites around Buffalo NY. So I believe it would be safe to say, that in that area, the Terminal Railroad would be running signals that NYC had on the lines and would have to abide by NYC rules. In 1937 they were still using Mechanical Semaphores and started switching to Dwarf search lite signals in that whole area. I found a lot of info on rules and so forth, by clicking like I said, on the other links in the text, time consuming, but I wanted to see for myself. I originally found the site, by searching, ''Terminal Railroad Semaphore Signals 40's, 50's era Buffalo NY'' and that site came up.
Thanks Frank, I read the article, but I can't find where you see the info about the Terminal Railroad of Buffalo.
According to this site, they were semaphores, a lot of info, if You feel like reading, some pic's:

I have been studying this railroad (it was part of the NYC) and I was wondering if it was signalled or was in dark territory, and if it was signalled whay type (semaphore, G type, searchlight, etc)?
EDIT: the question is asking about the 1940's-1950's.
