Reading station in Reading PA
Posted by crhostler61 on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 8:49 AM

For many years I've had the desire to model the old Franklin St station of the Reading Railroad in Reading PA. I have many fond memories of riding trains from there years ago. But it's only been recently where I'm looking at that desire seriously. I have no photos of my own of the station but I did find a web site with photos.

I find the web site to be very annoying, but there are a good number of photos on it of the station.

Whether or not I follow through with modeling this station depends heavily on what is commercially available to bring it all together. So far I am having no luck, but I could very well be missing something.

Any thoughts, ideas, or suggestions...short of scratchbuilding?

It doesn't appear to be too daunting a task. You could make the walls of wood or plastic cutting out the archs before assembly. Then cover with brick paper. The shed extensions are available as plastic kits. You might also look at the Walthers Union station as a starting point. Hardest part of any scratch building Is starting. You don't need to have everything figured out before beginning. Some things become obvious as work progresses.

Mark:

I did a quick search on Walthers web site and found this. It has the arched windows.

This might be a good starting point:

Mark H,

I believe the hardest challenge is to find that stonework, if at all. That would be tough, trying to scratch it.

Have Fun!
