Substitue sound needed for H16-44
Posted by tony22 on Thursday, March 6, 2014 4:35 PM

I've been adding sound to my N scale fleet and ran into a problem. I think this is the right section for my question because it has to do with what the real Fairbanks Morse 8 cylinder opposed engine, used in the H16-44, sounds like.

I'm using LokSound Select decoders. They currently don't offer a sound file for the FM engine. However QSI and Sountraxx do have samples for their decoders. The links for their sound samples are here

http://qsisolutions.com/products/techinfo/titan/q-titan-upgrade-codes-hoscale.html

and here

I guess I'm asking (for those who may be interested) to listen to the FM samples and then try to pick what might be a good substitute from the LokSound sample set, located here

http://www.esu.eu/en/downloads/sounds/loksound-select/loksound-select-usa/

There are two pages on that last link but not every engine has a sample sound. I did this myself and I did pick one out (I think the LokSound EMD 567 sounds "closest"), but would appreciate it if anyone else might care to recommend a substitute.

Until LokSound produces a FM sound file I'll have to use the one that sounds best.

Tony,

The only thing in common with the EMD 567 and the FM 'OP' is that they are both '2 stroke' power plants.  The EMD '567 Chant' is rather distictive and will be called out by many modelers.  If you look at the ESU page, there is a link to the sound files they are working on and will be available sometime in the near future - The FM 'C Liner'is there about half was down the page - Same power plant.  I would just work on the engines you can get correct sound files for right now.

Thanks Jim. I'm itching to get my H16s done only because I will also be taking care of the red and green running lights at the same time, as part of the DCC install. I really want to see all that suff working in DCC. :-) I have a friend who will reprogram the LokSound decoders for me once the FM sound files are available, so I was hoping to use something close in the meantime.

Digitrax makes N-scale sound decoders that allow you to download FM diesel sounds. I have one in my H-16-44 (both HO) and it works well.

Hmm, I didn't know about the Digitrax solution. Looks like they just came out. The specs make them out to be a tiny bit thicker than the LokSound Select Micro. Might make a difference; might not. I'll have to see how the Select works out. Thanks for this, though. Good to know there is an alternative.

The Digitrax decoder is an upgrade of one they've had out a couple of years now. A nice thing about it is you can substitute .wav files if you want to say have a different horn or something. Just for fun in my RDC I replaced the 'coupler crash' sound with a .wav file of a conductor yelling "all aboard".
