Hello all,
I'm modelling the CNW in the late 1950s in N Scale, and I've found it's not as easy to find covered hoppers for this era as it is for other eras – in N Scale at least. I came across three covered hoppers on eBay that were allegedly used by the CNW, one of which is here:

The other two are substantially the same. The build date is 8-40, which is good for my purposes, but the car doesn't bear any CNW markings. It has ACFX reporting marks and bears the Kerr McGee logo instead of CNW. I asked the seller about this and got the following response:
"These are ACF hoppers made for CNW. That's what it says on the bottom of this box."
Is there any way these would be considered CNW hoppers, or are they just Kerr McGee cars, and is the box mislabeled?
It appears that the original owner got the models and the boxes mixed up(pretty typical). IREK's buys up lots of collections and sells them on eBay.

What are you trying to accomplish? Do you only want cars that were owned by the C&NW? Or cars that might have appeared on the C&NW in the era you model?
ACF was a prototype car builder, and also leased cars with reporting marks ACFX. They could have leased that car to the C&NW, or they could have leased the car to Kerr McGee, or they could have leased the car to someone else. There is no way of knowing this unless you do a whole lot of research.
That car as painted/lettered may also never have existed. Again a lot of research would be required to get a definitive answer.
My opinion is if the 1940 date suits your era, and you like the way the car looks, operate it on your layout until such time as an "expert" makes a visit and picks that car out as being incorrect. At that point you can make a decision as to whether or not the car leaves or the expert leaves.

I vote for the "expert" to leave.
Looking at that car I think I would let it pass..I've seen better and the lube plate doesn't fit the 40s..

I'm fine with non-CNW cars as well. I already purchased one MSTL covered hopper, as well as a Fort Dodge Des Moines & Southern boxcar for use on my CNW tracks. However, Kerr-McGee doesn't appeal to me quite as much as MSTL and FDDMS, so I think I won't buy this one.

Kind of a trick question because consolidated stencil boxes appeared in 1972 and initially contained airbrake information. Lube information came later, I think still in the 1970s however, so the lube plate title is sometimes misused. All I know is that since I model the 1960s as soon as I see a consolidated stencil plate or lube plate it is either a car too new for my era, or I have to decide if removing the plate leaves a paint and numbering scheme I can otherwise live with.

Keep in mind a 1940 built date doesn't mean the car is correct for your period. Freight cars last for many decades, so can be repainted several times. Although this car appears to have both "BLT" and "NEW" dates in 1940, the company herald appears to be from a later time like the 1960's, and as noted earlier the lube stencils are from the 1970's. Also, if you look carefully, you can see the area around the reporting marks are slightly darker, so I suspect as someone earlier surmised, someone took a CNW car and re-lettered it for Kerr McGee using paint and decals.
