Rutland Reporting Marks
Posted by cefinkjr on Friday, November 1, 2013 12:44 AM

I am assembling several Accurail 41' steel gondolas for a friend.  One in the current batch is lettered for the Rutland.  The reporting marks consist of the full name (RUTLAND) and the number on the sides of the car with only the letter R and the number on the ends.

Is this correct?  I've always understood the Rutland's official reporting mark to be RUT and that should appear on the ends of the car.  A current (?) list on the web shows RUT as the official reporting mark for the Rutland and the Vermont Railway.

The BLT date on this gondola, by the way, is 3-25 (or 3-23?  It is small!).

"R"    is probably correct

Found this

"R    *ROSWELL RAILROAD (SOUTHERN RWY.; PIEDMONT AIR LINE OF RICHMOND & DANVILLE RAILROAD SYSTEM)

R          +RUTLAND RWY."

"* (Asterisk) or + (plus) denotes duplicated or reassigned reporting marks"

Also

"RUT        (VTR) VERMONT RAILWAY, INC. [RUTLAND RAILROAD]"

at    http://www.pwrr.org/rrm/

No dates given but the "R" is probably an older reporting mark - no longer used.

This site has dates

http://www.nakina.net/other/report/reportr.html

"AAR Reporting Marks: An incomplete summary of the various reporting marks compiled from ORERs"

Shows "R"   7/1923 - 4/1970.

Also shows "RUT" 1/1994- 7/2005

The dates are apparently the dates of ORER's which the compiler of the list had access to, so not all inclusive.

I tried to sell my two cents worth, but no one would give me a plug nickel for it.

I don't have a leg to stand on.

Yes, "R" is absolutely correct.

Check out these builder's photos:

http://canadianfreightcargallery.ca/cgi-bin/image.pl?i=r508&o=rutland

You can see the end reporting mark on both cars, and the gondola actually has the "R" reporting mark above the car number on the side.

Those photos certainly tell the story.  And both cars are more modern than the Accurail car (I was ready to file this under "Oddities From the Distant Past" or some such).

This is a minor, even trivial, example of why I have been fascinated by railroading for 70+ years.  I am constantly learning some new detail.

Thanks for the info.

My 1951 ORER show the reporting mars as 'R'.  My 1959 ORER shows an 'R' as well.  the 'RUT' must have been added later....

Chris:

I took a few minutes this morning to explore your Canadian Freight Railcar Gallery web site a little more and had to reply again to thank you for it.  That is one terrific site!  I've added it to my list of preferred references.  I did take the liberty, however, of changing the name to Canadian+++ Freight Railcar Gallery.

You wouldn't know of a similar site for passenger cars, would you?  (Some people are just never satisfied. Indifferent)

Thanks again.
