Recently I purchased six Athern Blue Box heavyweight coaches done in B&O Royal Blue livery. Except for the lettering, the coaches are blue all over. I'm wondering if the roofs were actually painted black or dark gray on the prototype.
JIMVALLE,
The one's I rode on in Chicago, were all Blue, the tops appeared to be a different shade, because they were dirty, from steam Loco's and the Lettering was Gold...
Cheers,
Frank

I recall seeing the black roofs but, don't recall seeing the gray roof.
I remember this because in the Columbus Union Station coach yard there was several baggage cars, coaches and PRR/REA express boxcars in storage.

In general, I believe heavyweight cars usually had black roofs because the roofs had car cement or something similar on them, they weren't painted black.
Stix,
I believe you are correct..
