I acquired one of these units a while back and was wondering what service they saw on the prototype. The information and photos I have found so far have them at the point of short passenger trains, however some of the books have just said "local service" with no reference to if it was local passenger or local freight. I'd really like to use this unit on my layout in a reasonably prototypical manner.
Any clarification would be helpful.

The RS12s was used in local freight service or as a terminal switcher .It could also be assigned as a branchline locomotive.

Can you give us the locomotives number? I found one of my Baldwins was in commuter service out of Philly during the week and yard service on weekends and holidays.

Same number as mine. PRR class BS12as. Steam generator and trainphone equipped. Commuter service from Philly 5 days a week. Sometimes used as a switcher. Here is a sketch of it.

It seems to have lived into the PC merger because there is no disposition in the data sheet.

I run mine with a 2 or 3 car set of HW coaches from Bachmann. I have yet to put the train phone equipment on it. The parts are still in the package and it is on my to do list.
