Many of the SD40-2 locomotives have been put in storage or sold by BNSF, so more than like the SD40's are gone. There are very few turbo 645's left out there, many have been de-turbo'd...like the turbo 567's before them......

Believe it or not, the ex-ATSF SD40s are still on the roster. The SD40-s that have been retired are older BN units, the Kato 40-2s are these models.

According to my trusty 2004 Edition of The Official Locomotive Rosters & News, BNSF still has 26 SD40s on their roster (as of press-time of this book). It doesn't say whether they're from BN or Santa Fe.

It's a great book to have for roster info. See it at HistoricRail.com.

The Santa Fe only had 20 SD40's in series 5000-5019. One or two were destroyed in derailments.
