I remember these cars from 30 years ago, i'm surprised they survived this long.

To me it is like scraping an old car. You will regret that down the road. Yours, Elvin Howland/Layout Concepts

I remember many years ago, when I was a little boy, seeing a documentary on Death Valley. Apparently there was a scrap yard near Death Valley where a lot of Santa Fe cars were being scrapped.
I remember being very upset about that.

It looks like they may have plain bearings, which will be the reason why they won't be accepted in interchange to go anywhere. There could also be other issues preventing them from "rolling on their own", such as outdated inspections and the like.

I have room in my back yard for half of one car.

The U.S. Navy will scrap many, many scores of box cars located at the former Concord (CA) Naval Weapons Station. The cars will be partially disassembled there and be recycled off-site. The cars are allegedly in too bad of shape to roll on their own. Today's newspaper article didn't mantion any possibility for boxcar "adoption."
