Caboose (C-30-1) marker Lights?
Posted by Attuvian on Monday, January 24, 2011 12:05 PM

I have a Walthers Platinum Line C-30-1 caboose (SP #668).  It came without marker lights.  I have noted a number of photos of larger scale models and a dimensional drawing on Trainweb that have them.  So far, the only posted photos that I've run across of actual cabooses in this series do not have them.  What gives?

If I install them they will be jewelled as I've got bigger fish to fry and am not yet geared up mentally for refurbing this unit with the pickups and whatnot for LEDs. Precision Scale (#31333) has some brass ones.  Are there any others out there?

I have some caboose marker light kits for HO but it depends on how many rivets you want to count.

Mine are operated by a small watch battery and the smoke stack is the on/off switch. I bought them off of ebay a couple years ago.

Do a Google search for caboose light kit. There are plenty out "There".

Some drill out brass marker lights and install surface mount LED's and very small diameter magnet wire, probably #40 to #45 wire.

If you ever fall over in public, pick yourself up and say “sorry it’s been a while since I inhabited a body.” And just walk away.

Tomar makes lighted markers.  Now with LEDs too.  I used the 1.5 volt bulb markers on my Intermountain cabeese:

Pretty easy to do.  Simply drill two holes in the caboose and insert the markers.  No painting or assembly of the markers is required.  I used a AA battery to power mine.

And you don't have to hook up the wiring if you're not up to it yet.  The markers have colored lenses so they should appear to be jeweled even if not powered.  And then when you're ready, they markers will be ready for power.

I'm not familiar with SP practices, but Tomar makes these markers with either red, green, green lenses, or as I have (for Santa Fe), red, amber, amber lenses.

Thanks, Matt.  I like the flexibility that comes with the lighrted lenses.  I'll check 'em out.

Matt,

Just went to the Tomar site and got lost (and distracted!).  Can you provide a part #?

Sure thing John, and yep their website is a little hard to maneuver around if you have never been there before.

The HO scale (I'm assuming you're HO right?) Tomar markers are:

1.5 volt bulb

807 (for red, green, green)

809 (for red, amber, amber)

3 volt led

807L (for red, green, green)

809L (for red, amber, amber)

Here is a link to the page they are located on (near the top):

Tomar Marker Lights

And the Walthers listing for them:
