Im wanting to look for more information on the L&N railroad line. Specifically information on the route it took south out of Louisville, KY and what industries it served. Im just not sure where to start my quest for this information. Any ideas??

You might check out the L&N HS http://www.lnrr.org/.  Some of the books or back issues of their magazine might help.

Enjoy

Detailed maps may be found in Steam Powered Videos Comprehensive Railroad Atlas of North America - Appalachia and Piedmont by Mike Walker.  The route south of Louisville passed through the towns of:   South Park, Coral Ridge, Brooks, Hubers, Shepherdsville, Salt River, Bardstown, Bardstown Junction, Belmont, Lebanon Junction, Booths, Colesburg, Tunnel Hill, Eliaabethtown, Gaithers, Glendale, Homeland, Nolin, Sonora, Upton,Vento, Bonnieville, Dividing Ridge, Mumfordville, Rowletts, Horse Curve, Cave City, Park City (Glasgow Junction), Rocky Hill, Smiths Grove, Oakland, Glossom, Sunnyside.....

Any Official Guide of the Railways from your period of interest would also be of assistance to you.  L&N had timetable scheduled freight movements on this route until at least 1970.

Bryan,

The line from Louisville to Nashville is known as the "Mainline" and is still a busy CSX route.

Along with the L&N Historical Society you may want to check out these Yahoo sites http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/lnrr/ and http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/L_and_N_Railroad/ both require you to join but if you want information on the L&N these are good places to go.

Heh heh heh. Rode through there in a boxcar in the summer of 62, en route to New Orleans. I  used to ride freight trains home on leave from the Air Force base at Biloxi Miss.Big Smile

Hey hobo9941 I probably waved to you when you went through Bonnieville, spent the summers sitting in my grandfathers front yard watching trains go past.

Go to the OpSig industry database page http://www.opsig.org/industrydb/ and click on the OpSigSTH.txt to get a industry listing for the states listed.  You can also convert to a spreadsheet for easier sorting.  It is not all inclusive but a very good start.
