Fallen Flags is a great website for American RR photos, and it's easily navigable. Unfortunately, the vast majority of photos on the site were taken after 1960, so it doesn't do the majority of modelers (who model the 1940-1960 transitional era) much good. It's a good place to START, however, and is where I generally look first, especially if someone wants me to paint a diesel for them.

A better photo database with hundreds of THOUSANDS of photos, is the Railfan.net photo database. Unfortunately, this site doesn't have a working search engine, so it's a royal PITA to find anything. The site is about evenly divided between modern USA, old USA, and foreign railroading. http://abpr2.railfan.net/

The best freight car research website online is undoubtedly the Rensselaer Model Railroad Society's website. It's a pay site ($5 a month), but contains the best pre-1960 freight car history anywhere online (or published). Their model RR scenery section is well worth the $5. http://railroad.union.rpi.edu/
