Amtrak AEM-7 AC Units
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, May 26, 2004 7:10 PM
I'm looking to model an Amtrak AEM-7 AC unit with all the resistor mounted on the roof. Are there any drawings of the these units that outline the dimensions of these resistor grids? How can I model them?

Thank you

I'm fairly sure Railroad Model Craftsman covered these units some time ago (or maybe it was Model Railroader) I'll check my collection and get back to you!

Don't mean to steal any thunder from Peter, but here's what using "Amtrak AEM7" as a search term in the Index of Magazines turned up:
Amtrak's AEM7's: born to run Railroad Model Craftsman, August 1985, page 61 ( AEM7, AMTK, AMTRAK, ELECTRIC, "NEUBAUER, ERIC", ENGINE, LOCOMOTIVE, PROTOTYPE, RMC )
If he doesn't find his copy, I'll check mine to see if it shows the resistor grids. Would think that possibly Athabasca, Absolute Scale or one of the other resin or lost wax vendors might have the grids as an add on item.

Empire,
Eric Neubauer's article, pages 61-65, includes front, top, right and left profile view plans in S scale. It also includes both color and black and white photos some of which will help you with lettering and weathering. You might want to check Miniatures by Eric Web site:
http://www.miniaturesbyeric.com
for the roof detail parts. Try the photo etching vendors for the expanded metal mesh screens atop and on the front and back of the resistor banks. You may want to look at the fora threads for ribbed passenger car sides to aid in modeling the sides. Try the back issue or railroad photo Web sites so that you can get the livery colors right.

Thanks everybody for their comments. I'll look into everything. However, I'm not sure if any articles have been written on the new AEM-7 units. These are the DC locos remanufactured by Amtrak into AC locos. They have extra grids behind the air conditioner (which is smaller) and extra grids on the side of the roof.

Again thanks for the input.
