Clinchfield Location Question
Posted by Beach Bill on Wednesday, September 23, 2009 8:30 AM

What is the location name on the Clinchfield immediately south of Scaggs Hole tunnel, at approximately MP 7.5?    This would be between Scaggs Hole and Bartlick.

A number of years ago I hiked into that area to photograph trains at Scaggs Hole Tunnel.  There was a rr equipment box near a culvert just south of the south portal, and I seem to remember it was stenciled as "Tom's Creek".   I did find one listing suggesting that it may be "Tom's Bottom".   There is no label shown on the USGS maps I have (indeed, they label it as "Skeggs Hole"), although Bartlick appears.  Does anyone know the actual/proper site location name?

This area is where my HO could-have-been Winneshiek & Western Railroad connected with the Clinchfield.   I have used Dante as the station name for years, but that is far to the south....   Thanks.
