I have a few business's in mind for an mid 50's layout but I'm not sure how some of the products they deal with are handled. I have a grain implement and a Co-Op (each in seperate towns) that recieve fertilizer for farms. What would the fert be recieved in? The Co-Op also recieves home heating oil and diesel fuel for ag equipment. What size tank cars would be approriate for the time? There is also a cement/concrete business that would recieve cement, ash, sand, and I've even heard of cinders. What kind of ash would they get (I've heard fly and pot)? Am I missing any other ingrediants? There is a rock quarry (well actually two but only concerned with one) in this same town so any crushed aggregrates they wouldn't have to get by rail. I need to see if I can find a listing for the prototype to see what kind of rock. It's in WI so it could be limestone, granite, shale and those are just the rock types I know of that are from the area. There could be more types. I do know the prototype delt with crushed rock. The shooting range we used to go trap shooting at in gym was next to it, so when I wasn't shooting I could be found at the fence watching all the equipment being used.
Today fertilizer is shipped in standard covered hoppers. In the 1950s, probably bagged or bulk in boxcars.
Fly ash is a byproduct from coal power plants and is used for many things including mixing with cement. Potash (not pot ash) is not ash but a mineral mined out of the ground (a form of potassium salt.) It's primary use is as fertilizer.
For tank cars, for your time frame you're looking at the older 8000 and 10000 gallon riveted non-pressure tanks.

Fertilizer would come in boxcars, probably bagged.
8-10,000 gal tank cars for oil and gasoline.
Cement would be in small covered hoppers or boxcars. Sand, gravel and cinders would be open top hoppers. Fly ash would be in covered hoppers.
Your rock would be granite or limestone or shale, but not all three (actually not any two). Limestone or granite would most likely be a crushed stone product.

thanks guys. i think i will model bagged fert, but what would it be held in if the co-op recieved fert in bulk?
MILW-RODR thanks guys. i think i will model bagged fert, but what would it be held in if the co-op recieved fert in bulk?
Fert would also come in GATX or UTLX 8000 and 10000 tank cars as well as boxcars.
Also a Co-Op could recieve bags of feed.
