Super Chief question
Posted by Eddystone on Tuesday, May 11, 2004 6:13 PM
I am buying Walther's Super Chief passenger train and was wondering if the Santa Fe used any other type of sleepers in the conist besides the 442 and 10-6 sleepers in the mid 50s.

In the mid 50's Santa Fe's Blue series could be found in the consist. The Blue series were built in 1947 by PSMC and contained 10 Roomettes 3 Double Bedrooms and 2 Compartments. These cars were mainly used in general service at that time and ran mainly on the Chieff, Texas Chief, San Fransisco Chief and some of Santa Fe's secondary trains. The only way to get this car is to either purchase a brass model (Coach Yard, Cascade and Soho all imported models) or purchase the brass car sides from the Santa Fe Historical and Modeling Society at www.atsfrr.com

The Super Chief operated in the mid-fifties with PALM series 10-6 sleepers from AC&F, PINE series 10-6 sleepers from Budd, REGAL series 4-4-2 sleepers from AC&F and the VISTA series 4-Drawing Room 1-Double Bedroom Lounge Observations from P/S and one VISTA CLUB from AC&F. On rare occasions during peak travel periods a BLUE series 10-2-3 would substitute for an ailing 10-6 or one of the P/S 1947-48 built REGAL series would sub for one of the AC&F REGAL series. Hope this helps with question about mid-fifties Super Chief Sleepers. The normal peak travel season Super Chief operated with two PALM series, two REGAL series, three PINE series and one VISTA series. Besides the sleepers the train operated with a 600-606 series 36-seat dining car and a 500-505 series Pleasure Dome lounge car. A 1339-1344 series Crew Dormitory lounge car, 3500 series Baggage Car and an 89-98 series Railway Post Office Car. For power it was A-B-B-A sets of EMD F3 or F7 units later during the peak travel season an extra B unit was operated west of La Junta from about 1956 on. Hope this answers any questions you might have had.
