Modern Freight Car Trucks

Just about any modern car in interchange service will ride on roller-bearing trucks. These have the triangular or hexagonal wheel caps on the ends of the axle that turn with the wheel.

Today, older style friction-bearing trucks might be found on maintnence cars and in museums. Model railroader ran an excellent article a few months back (I forgot which issue) that goes into great detail explaining the types of trucks, the different variations, and when the trucks were used. That article should be able to answer your questions.
