I am trying to model some GTW F3's and I need to know what phase of F3's they used, and if the GTW had any B-units. I am also looking for as many photos of GTW F3's (early) as possible becuse i plan to super detail them.

 I will greatly appreciate any help.

Most were phase one's.But over the years they had so many rebuilds and fixes done that by the end they more closely resembled F7's.You need a good shot of the loco your painting and detailing,they went through alot of cosmetic changes.

If you can get your hands ona copy of Rail America Volume One ( it's a book with tons of photo's and paint daigrams for CN and it's US subsidiaries) This series of books was designed as modeller guides for painting and detailing.They also list the all time rosters and numbers the loco's carried along with all the varient paint schemes.

The books are put out by LPD publishing out of Vancouver BC ISBN number is 0-920264-18-2

To answer your other question they were all A unit's no B's in the F3's, hey were all bought in 1948 and were originally numbered 9006-9027.Looking at my copy of the book there is a good six or seven photo's from the original as delivered Gold leaf and Olive Green the more normal Olive Green and Yellow and the final zebra stripe schemes.

http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/gtw/gtw.html I only see F3As, but these are accumulated pics, not sure if they used any B units. From all the pics, it appears that the early 9000 # units were F3 PhII w/ low fans, later higher # units are F3 Ph4, but could be rebuilds some seem to have F7 ungrade by late '59 and into '60s Note the single blatt horns throughout and that crazy bell placement. Can't tell from the pics if they ordered AA sets w/ steam gen one A and water tank in other.

 I was into the early geeps especially the GT GP18s, a beautiful machine.

 Their roster isn't too far off,only one F3B was purchased by Canadian National (they purchased the GT's F3's at the same time as they were off the same order. ) CNR was late into deisilzation so the US subsidiaries were as well. There was still mainline steam on the GT as late as 1960.CN bought the F3's 9000-9005 for them selves then the GT units kicked in 9006-9027 all units were A's accept for CNR's 9003. Once they moved onto the F7's of which they rostered far more there were tons of B units.As I said earlier with all the different wreck re-builds and add ons and subtractions a few of the GT's eneded up resembling F7's more due to their long life as they ended up running well into the 70's.So to model one, the key is a good picture. Unfortunalty a picture from the year your modelling as well because of all the changes.

Hmmm, have you considered starting with a Genesis F3.  I just happen to have a GTW AA set sitting here on my "repaint" track.  I have no idea if they are early or late models or paint schemes as I know nothing about GTW.  I could repaint any other road name painted AA set just as easily, if you have a pair of Fs to swap.

I am trying to get thease units  to paint & decal them, so i was thinking about useing a Highliners F series kit and a stewart chassies. unfortunatly at Walthers price this locomotive (ho scale) would cost me the same as a bowser steam locomotive kit (another future GTW loco project) the decals I have are for passenger locos, with just a stripe running up the side and no nose "wings" (for lack of a better word) and yellow (or gold leaf) on the top of the hood.

If the paint job is just the olive green with the gold or yellow,the actual gold leaf was a 1953 paint job only after '56 or so the gold leaf was changed to yellow for a cheaper and longer lasting paint job.This is the frieght train paint scheme, the F3's were freight only. They would pinch hit if a torpedo tube geep was unavailable on the GT but would require a steam gen car. i seem to rmemeber the GT rebuilding a couple of their F3's with steam generators after the fact? But you would have to do a bit of research ss to the numbers.

Athearn Genesis did paint F3's in the GT green and yellow , so has Intermountain ( not that this helps because you already have the decals etc. But you may bea ble to pick up the factory painted ones cheap and sell off the others.

I have a copy of Charles Foss "Evening of the Diesel", released in 1980. It details the transition from steam to diesel on the GTW.

THe year of 1947 saw a pair of F3 demo units barnstorming GTW rails. An order was placed that year for 25 F3A's & 2 F3B's. THe first two B's & the first 4A's went to parent CN after breaking in on GTW. THe remaining 22 F3A's were asswigned to GTW. GTW's 9006-9015 were phase 2 F3A's with chicken wire grillws. THe 9016-27 were phase 4 F3's with stainless stell filter grilles similar to F7A's of 1949. On the GTW, it was deemed not necessary to have dynamic brakes. In most cases, the GTW rain their F3A's back to back. THey had no nose end MU jumpers till 1954-1955.

As for color scheme, the 1948 version appears to be a "butter knife" version (old wafer 1938-1954). The "yellow nose" appears in 1957(circle & wafer 1954-1961 w maple leaf). Some were painted in the "new image" red/black stripe scheme(wet noodle 1961-on).

9013 rebuilt by CN in 1973 to 1750hp, in CN service. The rest were traded to EMD for SD-40 & GP38AC's.  

There may have been plenty of run thru CN F's from Toronto to Durand. In the 1960's, I can remember seing many CN stripe units pulling passenger trains (I may have ignored any GP's).

Ok I did alittle research, the decals I have are for before 1950. i found some pictures of the GTW f's  IN PORT HURON in 1948 so i am going to model 9012.
