Ballast color is a function of the source.  I always thought the PRR used an iron oxide colored ballast.  It just dawned on me a couple of years ago that most of my railfanning was at stations where the ballast was turned red from brake shoe residue.  Any light gray will probably be as close as you are going to get.

Probably depends on how weathered you want your ballast to look.

Ballast color for Youngstown Ohio

Hi guys

I'm in the UK so can't jump in my car and just wander over and look!

I'm modelling HO 1954 PRR and NYC - Youngstown to Ashtabula Ohio. Does anyone know what color ballast I should use for over that way at that time?

Thanks
