Vanderbilt tender modifications

Hi all,

Somewhere along the line the Pittsburg Shawmut & Northern RR  (and others) extended the holding capacity of their vanderbilt tenders (ie squared off the water tank and extended the coal bin sides up).

Does anyone have a picture of the rear of a tender with these modifications? I'm working on building a model of a tender and am wondering if they cut a piece of steel to fit around the end of the water tank - so the concave end sticks out - or if they just put a larger piece that extended from the top of the new water tank down to the tender frame, making the rear flat?

If I recall there was an article in MR many years (like over 20) ago where a tender like this was modeled - maybe for the SP.  Unfortunately I can't locate the article in the Magazine database.

I went to the magazine database and keyworded Vanderbilt and came up with 24 entries. Some of these, admittedly, are not going to be of any use to you - some go clear back to WWII - but there are a few that are relatively recent!!!

This was a common feature with the UP, though SP had a few...I did a a similar modifcation decades ago using the MDC Vanderbuilt tender, I removed the top 1/3 of the water compartment to drop in the extended assembly, I made no modifications to the tender end. This gells with my recollection of how these were done, I suspect, that surviving UP 2-10-2 5011 has such a tender and that must be where I got the idea after observing it in person . Too bad those particular photos were lost to fire years ago and the 5011 is not available for public inspection these days...
