TP&W paint colors
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, January 16, 2004 9:00 PM
Would anyone happen to have a recomendation for paint colors for the original green and yellow TP&W scheme for Badger Modelflex and Polly Scale paints? I was told Pullman green for Modelflex, but it appears too dark and brownish. No clue on the yellow.

Thanks,

Modelflex PG is about the correct color for the original TP&W scheme. I've got three engines to paint (100, 101 and 204), and that's the color I plan on using. Check out the various color TP pics on the Fallen Flags website to see some pics of the original scheme, and you'll see what I mean. Of course, Morning Sun will be coming out with a color TP book in a year or so, if you want to wait!

Most TP vets I've talked to usually call the old scheme :olive and gold". Olive is more brown than green.

Thank you, would you happen to know what color yellow you are going to use?

Thanks,

Actually, no, but I know what shade of yellow I'll look for. The yellow was a rich, darkish yellow, sort of like imitation gold. I'm thinking about the same color the NKP used on it's first diesel scheme (UP and C&NW yellow are WAY too bright).

From looking at the only color photograph, It looks like EL yellow would work.

Thanks for the ideas. It is very hard to tell. Plus there is the difficulty of trying to match the yellow on the decals. Microscale has a set of decals for the early TP&W diesels, but the yellow on it seems much richer or more of a gold than in the color pictures that I've seen. I guess matching the decals is more important if you want the model to look right. I bought some Modelflex B&O duluxe gold, which is close but not quite right.

I always thought the Microscale decals looked too pale when compared to the color photos I've seen, and much prefer the Champ early TP&W diesel decal sets.

Too bad no one makes the pre-1950 TP&W "The Peoria Way" diamond decals. I'd really like to model a couple TP steamers. Of course, I'd have to figure out what shade of green they used on the H-10 4-8-4's!
