M.U.Hoses

Not sure why I've never asked before. What does the "M.U." stand for when people are talking about M.U.hoses? I know what they look like and where they are , I just don't know what they are.

Multiple Unit. These are used to connect the units of a consist together and allows all of them to be operated from the lead unit as slaves. This was one of the big advantages that diesel had over steam because it allowed additional engines without additional crews. Now some roads also use radio control to run mid train helpers. They either have a control car coupled to the engines with a MU cable or one of the units of the lashup has a radio control system.

The control units often have some ID marks such as different color number boards or lettering that identify them as having manual plus radio control.
