Rail Fan Sites for Prototype Operations in Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico and Utah?
Posted by SilverSpike on Saturday, February 12, 2005 12:34 AM
We are going on a family vacation at the end of March to the Four Corners area and including the states listed in the subject line.

Does anyone live in these areas know of favorite rail fan sites for viewing prototype activity while we are out there?

Thanks,

Ryan

While not in the Four Corners area, Abo Canyon in New Mexico is great--High density traffic and beautiful scenery. I take it you're driving?

I'm not sure if either of these are exactly what you're looking for, but try "Somewhere West of Denver" http://www.somewherewest.com/index.html and Don Strack's Utah Rails site http://utahrails.net/index.php.

Ryan,
I lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico for a short time then moved back to Texas. While in Albuquerque I visited a small town by the name of Belen. Belen is just below Albuquerque on Interstate 25. If I recall correctly it's about a 30 minute trip form Albuquerque. Belen has an old train station (Santa Fe) which is open to the public. When I was there in 2000 the local train club had a display there. I was told that this yard was now used for fueling purpopes mainly. I was also told that around a 150 engines pass through this yard in a 24 hour period. I never stayed that long but back in 2000 I spent several hours at this yard and saw lots of traffic passing through at a low rate of speed. I really enjoyed my visits there. I don't know how the traffic is now (2005) but I bet there is still a lot of traffic. If you're in that area I think it would be worth your time to stop in Belen.

Have fun,
