Installing Decoders and Sound

I have a Digitrax Zephyr system and several old Atlas FP7's (Austria) and Athearn F7's. I would like to put diesel sound in all of them. I know room is a problem, so I would consider the B Unit.

My question is, do I have to have a separate decoder for the operation of the diesel, and another decoder for sound, or do they come together?

If they do or don't, who makes a good decoder for the operation, diesel sound, and both in one.

I agree. Soundtraxx makes an excellent series of decoders and speakers. They make both "sound only" decoders and decoders with sound plus power and lights.

Be warned though, that the cost of the sound decoder can often exceed the cost of the locomotive! Don't want you to suffer from "sticker shock"...

I'm familiar with your situation. Suggestion: You might want to reconsider repowering your Athearns with Proto Power "A-LIne" remotoring kits. Soundtraxx decoders are pretty nice but they're sensitive to "amperage". Some Athearns unfortunately, can put out 2 amps our more! The Mashima motors that come in the A-Line kit draw less than .75 amps and lower. Plus, your locos will run much much smoother. Don't forget to do the recommended "stall current test". If you decide to keep your stock Athearn motor, make sure everything is clean and lubed. Check out LItchfield Station & Tony's Train Xchange. Great tips for Athearns. You can e-mail these guys for advice, they're very helpful. Bruce from Litchfield station usually replies back within a few days. The websites also show pictures of speaker installations in F units. Some modifications are involved.

Your old Atlas units, if in good condition, should give you an easier time.
