If you use o 72 track 4x8 will not work because o 72 is 6 foot dim.
If you can't take the heat stay away from the boiler.http://s95.photobucket.com/albums/l138/acemike_2006

Check out the Nov / Dec issues of "O" guage Railroading and Classic Toy Trains.  They "Usually" highlight Christmas layouts.  Also here is a GREAT website for ideas:

Lots of ideas there.  Dave

You may want to post this up on the CTT Classic Toy Trains forum.  Not saying don't come around here, but they are more experienced with Lionel and similar buildings, may have some good ideas for you.  Good luck, I got back into the hobby with a Lionel under the tree at 40.  It's never too late to get the Lionel you never had as a kid.  Dave

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like a great opportunity. Hope to see some pics of the result. About plans, I would assume that the existing track and turnouts would dictate what you can do. Also you need to work around the buildings. I would guess that just laying the stuff on the board would pretty much plan itself. But then I am not much into complicated plans.
If you think you have it right, your standards are too low. my photos http://s12.photobucket.com/albums/a235/ARTHILL/ Art

Finally my wife agreed to allow me to set up my old 1954 Lionel trains under the tree., however she wants to use her Its a wonderfull life ceramic strutures to simulate the movie themes, thats ok with me, however I do not want to just put a loop in, I would like a more detailed track plan but still have room for the structures. I have the possibility of making a L shaped base 4 X8X4, also she wants the tree on this board. Anyone have any sugeations where I can find a good plan.  Its been 15 years since I had the trains out, and I am looking forward to it.  Thanks in advance.
