Dave:

I'd recc. either of the Model Railroader benchwork books.  For your purposes, the "Basic Model Railroad Benchwork" book by Jeff Wilson would probably be adequate.  For example, chapter 2 goes over how to make a simple grid table, with a parts list for all of the lumber and hardware.  Or if you're interested in something simpler, page 27 shows the principles behind a hollow-core door table mounted on standard table legs.  Linn Wescott's "How to Build Model Railroad Benchwork" book is more detailed and describes more detailed projects--if you plan on expanding/doing a larger layout in the future, I'd actually recc. both books.  By the way, welcome to the forum--you'll find a wealth of information from many experienced modelers!

Santa will finally be bringing my boys a train this Christmas.  I am tempted to just get a sheet of plywood to put it on, but was told that it's worthwhile to design a bench.  Any idea where I could get a design of a bench to bring to a local carpenter?  thanks...
