Hello Bob,

There is a grade measurement tool like the one you described in your original question, and you don't have to make it yourself. It's the K-tool grade gauge, and it can be used with either a two-foot or a four-foot level. It's available from Walthers, and you can find on the Walthers Web site at http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/211-150. I use one myself and it's a very handy tool.
