Using Velcro would depend on the dimensions of the foam backdrop and the layout you're attaching it to.  If you're using 2-in thick foam 24-in high and 8-ft long, you'll need a lot of Velcro to keep it from "flopping".  1.5-in foam 12-in high and 4-ft long would be a lot easier.

I have not tried what you are discussing, but I use a lot of foam. I like low temp hot glue gun for quick glueing. I use some velcro as well. It may depend on what you are fastening it to and if it needs to be removeble. I have one piece of backdrop fastened with screws for easy removal. The one problem I have with my one piece is that it dents a lot.

I'm thinking of using foam board for my backdrop. When I glue it to the back of the layout, how can I hold it in place while the glue dries? I was thinking of not using glue and using strips of velcro, instead. Would that work?
