Thanks Gary,
I find the Micro layout site excellent. I go there when I am frustrated for not having much layout space. It gives one lots of inspiration.

Did I give you the link to Micro Layout Design Gallery Kessi? It's all about how small can a layout be built (even a G scale layout that is 1 foot by 1foot). There is a catagory for shelf switchers. Be sure to visit the Home Page too.

Gary, thanks for your interest.
By the way, my layout is now miniscule. 4 ft by 1.5 ft. A sort of L shape. Space is very much at a premium. With Maerklin stuff that is not easy. But I can do lots of switching and of course layout building.

Thanks all.
I have enough info now to carry on with my project.
Maybe one day I'll even post a picture.

No less a railroad than the BNSF terminated a spur used for car storage by mounding about a dump truck load of gravel over the ends of the rails. No posts, no lights, nothing but gravel.

Can't get much easier than that.

Hi Kesi
As I recall, you have European style wagons which have buffer plates on their beams.
Since you are working towards a logging / mining layout, it might be realistic to make them from scale lumber, with a coupler pocket and a earth berm backing.

If you mess around on their web-site you might get lucky and find a picture.

What prototype are you planning to emulate? Kalmbach has a book on laying track and lineside details that shows how to make some US prototypes like the ones made from extra rail. If you're looking for an overseas prototype, then I'm not sure, but I imagine you could always get away with laying a tie across the railheads as was often done here in the States.

Buffer stops

I would like to scratchbuild buffer stops for my HO shunting yard. I thought that it would be easy, but I can't seem to decide on how to go about it. Has anybody built some before and are there easy methods?
Thanks.
