First off, I don't have any Atlas or Kato locos so I cannot comment on their quality. I have two BLI steamers, a 2-8-2 Heavy Mike and a 4-6-4 Hudson. Both of them are smooth runners and the sound is incredible. I have a couple of Spectrum locos, K-4, 4-6-4 and a N&W J-4-8-4. Both of these run nearly as well as the BLIs. I installed Soundtraxx decoders in them. I have several PK2 locos, all diesels. A couple of E-units in which I installed Soundtraxx DSD decoders and a S-3 and a GP7. The last two are voiceless. Aside from the legendary gear problems with the Geep, they are smooth runners, quiet and in the case of the Es, can pull the plaster off the walls. My ratings? Best steamers are BLIs. I really like the PK2 locos for diesels. I have several Athearn BB locos that run nearly as quiet as the Protos. Many are equipped with sound chips. For good to great performance at a reasonable price I don't think you can beat a PK2 diesel, especially when you can buy them on sale for 70% or more off of MSRP.
My 2-cents work that turned into 2-bits.

Remember its your railroad

I just purchased a Broadway Limited M1-b Pennsilvania Mountain type locomotive. (quite pricy compared to my other locomotives) It is absolutly incredible, both detailing and the sound system. The dual - mode sound decoder is exceptional on a DC system, so it makes me wonder just how great it is on DCC system. (It is my first sound equiped model so for me it is a piece of electronic art)

wjstix, I misread your post. When I first read it I thought you were saying that Athearn made Spectrum. I missed the comma between Athearn and Spectrum. My error.

Both are excellent models and the sound on the units is quite amazing. Wait untill you hear two Atlas SD26s roaring away in there 8th notch. Pretty sweet. Broadway limited makes some pretty amazing locomotives. My friend just bought an F9 from broadway and I have to admit it is quite the sight to be hold. The sound was very well done.

I have to chime in an say that my Proto 2000 S1 is exceptional! Beautiful detailing, crawls at low speed, and the price was right at Trainworld.com - over 70% off MSRP. (And I got the one I wanted.)

I think you mean Atheran Genesis. Bachman makes Spectrum.

I believe Atlas and BLI use the same QSI sound system in their sound equipped engines.

I think for diesels Kato, Stewart and Atlas are great. I only have 1 BLI engine (NW-2) and I really like it, but I know some BLI models have been criticized for inaccuracies in the models themselves or the paintschemes. Athearn, Spectrum and Life-Like would be next in quality. However all of these are good, I have at least one of each that I enjoy running.

BLI make a good product. If you look at the product section of their web site you will see that they have some different series. http://www.broadway-limited.com/ the powerhouse series has a little less detail than the others.

Personally, I think Atlas make the best diesels, but BLI and P2K are not very far behind.

Hey please remember to not use CAPS most find it hard to read[:D]

Loco's run in this order In my opinion.

Best. Kato, Proto, Atlas and Broadway are the same quality, these are based on the ones I have.
