Glueing Rail to Wood Ties
Posted by ericboone on Saturday, December 10, 2005 10:21 PM
All,

For those of you who hand lay track and glue the rail to the ties instead of spiking the rail, how do you hold the rail in gauge while the glue sets? I suppose a similar situation occurs with the Central Valley tie strips too.

Thanks,

Eric

I would drive a few well-placed spikes to keep them in gauge, and then remove them later if I felt it was necessary. Maybe spike every tenth tie, and check the gauge frequently as you glue.

Seems to me that you would do one section at a time, adjust and monitor as the glue dries, and then go on once you have satisfied yourself that you are on the right...well, you know. Run a piece of rolling stock to confirm.

How's that? Make sense?

I just use full Coke cans to hold down the rail on CV tie strips.
