I'm looking for a diesel switcher from the 1950's give or take 10yrs that is sound and DCC equipped.
I have several Broadway Ltd steamers but would like to try another Mfr.

Any in put as too goodrunners, availability etc would be appreciated

If you are looking for RTR, you will have to dig some. Go to sites like Tony's or Loys, if you don't see it, contact them and they will tell you if it is possible and how much. With the new sound decoders and small speakers, creative people are squeezing them into everything.

at this point the BLI is the only RTR sound switcher I know of. You can install it yourself or get somebody to do it for you, but the BLI has more and better sounds than you can get in most decoders. I have a BLI switcher and I am very pleased with it. www.trainworld.com has a good price on them.

At the momemt, I dont think anyone is making a RS3/4 wth DDC and Sound equipped. I know as I was looking myself and wasnt able to find one. Although, I am sure with the trendin engines of late, it shoulnt be too much longer before some one does. If there is one... lemme know!

Best Regards

I have two RS-3s (Atlas) that I have installed Soundtraxx sound in them, following the same approach that Bruce Petraca of Litchfield Station uses. Not a particularly difficult installtion, but I did have to shave the short hood weight to make room for the speaker. They sound really nice, and I am told better than BLI. I don't own any BLI so I can't compare.

I have been trying to decide whether to sell them. One is Boston & Maine, the other is Rutland. I also have a B & M FL-2 in same condition. Other than a brief stint testing the completed installation, they are new. If interested, contact me off list @ fannynsparky@msn.com.

Sound is not all that hard to install. But, if you dont feel comfortable there are "installers" online that will do it for you. The cheapest I have come across is Discount DCC

Joe,

Thanks for info on DCC / SOUND installer. I have been debating weather to sell or try my hand at decoder installaton in many of my "old" DC locos espacially some that really perform well. This mite be an easy "upgrade" for me I'll give 'em a try

Again thanks for info

If an engine runs good in DC it's worth converting to DCC !!

I believe Walthers/LifeLike is coming out with a sound equipped GM (SW8?) Switcher soon. Don't know of any RTR sound equipped Alco RS-1/2/3's though. Maybe LifeLike will do a sound equipped RSC-2 someday??

FWIW I run a BLI NW-2 and LifeLike SW-7 back-to-back, unless they're right next to you it's hard to tell only one has sound.

p.s. I wonder if a Proto RS-2 might be easier than an Atlas RS-3 to convert to sound, since it looks like the Proto version has more room in the cab for a speaker??
