New to Model trains - need help
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, November 13, 2005 6:49 AM
I want to build a HO scale layout and am trying to find some books or magazines to make scenery and buildings. I don't want to build from kits, I would rather build from scratch if possible. I have bought a fair few magazines from the local newsagents but I can't seem to find anything with plans or something similar in them. Thanks all. Tony

Welcome aboard Tony !! [#welcome]

Kalmbach publishing has some books on scratch building and there are numerous threads in these forums about modelers that are doing it. You should be able to find these at a local hobby shop (LHS) or can even order on-line.

As far as plans - again, you can purchase books on all types of layout plans. And, there are many links on the net - here's a few to get you started.

Many others in the forum will supply you with lots of tips, hints and questions (like how much space you have and what type of operations are you interested in).

Don't get overwelmed and have fun.

Regards,

Tom

Welcome to the forum.

Many issues of MR and other model railroading magazines have a drawing in each issue. Some are cars, some are engines, and some are structures. Train shows usually have dealers in back issues. There are also articles from time to time on scratchbuilding. If you do a search (Index of Magaines above) using the term scratchbuilding you'll get a lot of hits. Again hit the used magazine dealers.

RMC is running a monthly column Scratchbuilder's Corner. It doesn't have plans, but does discuss scratchbuilding topics.

Enjoy
Paul
