grade crossings

I'm trying to create a modern HO grade crossing in and will be using styrene as the road between the tracks. Is there a standard on how wide the "street" should be inbetween the tracks. obviously the wider, the nore chance a train may derail, however i want it to look prototypical.

Use your NMRA standards gauge and get the flangeways the right width. The visual difference between the scale and real flangeways isn't enough to worry about, and too narrow a flangeway will give you nothing but headaches.
