Try modular built on foam in a 3/4 ply frame. Much lighter weight, and if you standardize the interface, you can hook them up in any order you like...
See www.hotrak.ca for some ideas.

Traveling layout... Well sort of!

The subject heading may be a little misleading but I'm seeking a advice from those of you who may have had similar situations.
I move around a bit for my job but have the fortunate ability to keep a layout in my sister-in-law and brother's house. Actually I think my brother enjoys having it but just won't admit it.
Anyway, the layout is in development stage, i.e. I have laid some track to make a loop so that I have something to mess with when I pay a visit. But overall the layout is in its infancy. I'm looking at using a spline system for sub-grade and homasote for final grade. I have an engineering mind so I like the idea of a solid base that I can achieve the grades and curves that I want. Any thoughts? Good... bad?
Aside from that. My biggest challenge is how to build structures and scenes not on the layout but at my home away from home. I was think of a sort of modular approach. Building the structure on 1/2" or 3/4" plywood and once complete incorporating that into the layout once I get it transported. I think this would be possible but would I run into any problems using a spline type framework that would have to take into consideration? Anyone see any flaws in my method or have any suggestions?
Thanks
M Shaw
