track gaps... a couple questions
Posted by streettrains on Sunday, October 9, 2005 4:50 PM
, I had to cut a small piece of track to fit in a spot, now there seems to be a small gap between the 2 sections..

will that affect the running?
Is there a gap filler?

or did I screw up my track laying!!!!

thanks
Mike

If your smallest locomotive will run across it, there isnt a problem. If there is, you need to add a pair of feeders to that section of track.

I had the same problem on my layout and used epoxy to fill the gap. I got the kind that is two sticks that you knead together to activate and press into the gap.

Enjoy

You might want to solder one side of the new track and just leave a small gap on the other.

Mike: how long ago did you cut the track? The wood used for the baseboards will expand and contract with (mostly) humidity and temperature. You may need the space again next summer.
We used to exhibit a portable layout. In March we cut joining sections of track (6" or so) and at each show during the year we had to trim the joining sections a little. Next March they were too short and we had tocut new joiners.
It is also known to cut small bits of rail to fill the gap. On the prototype this was called a dutchman. (Now we're going to have this forum locked down!)
