Fascia boards
Posted by dadret on Tuesday, September 6, 2005 6:43 AM
I'm on my first layout and am now to the point where I want to add fascia boards around the benchwork. I'd appreciate some suggestions from you more experienced modelers on what to use. Thanks.

I use 1/8" Masonite, though anything thin and flexible enough to bend around curves, while having enough strength to hold any switches, etc that you want to mount in it should be fine. I've seen pictures in MR of folks using wall paneling, which would also fit the bill for flexible yet strong.

Agree, 1/8" masonite is fairly cheap and real easy to work with. Paint it a darker color, some people like dark green and some like black. Whatever you paint it, use a satin or gloss finish so it can be easily wiped clean.

I measure the section that I'm going to attach the fascia to get the height of that section, and cut a length of it that wide. Then using some spring clamps, I hold it in place where that section is going to be attached. Then, I trace the profile of the scenery in that section onto the fascia strip. Cut along that line with a saber or jig saw, then attach it to the layout. When the adjacent sections are in place, I fill the seam with some filler putty, and sand it when it's set. I'm painting my fascia a dark earth color, so I'm not too concerned about the putty's color. Voila! Fascia!
