Memory needs help
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, August 12, 2005 9:32 AM
I am completing an HO ash pit. I need to find realistic looking coal ashes but the only thing I have been able to find is WS cinders. They are black in color. As I remember coal ashes I think they were a tan gray color.

I said "as I remember". my bad memory needs a lot of help.

If anyone is aware of realistic coal ash and cinders I would appreciate your input.

For bituminous (soft) coal, as they came out of the locomotive, ash cooled to a light gray color. Cinders were black. The difference here is that ash was powdery, and cinders were lumps. So, do you want to model ash, cinders, or a mix of the two? Take your pick, depending on the material you have.

How about left over charcoal from the BBQ?
