Prototype railroads have removed turntables and replaced them with switches, although the situations I have seen typically involve either smaller roundhouses, or where only a few stalls are still used by trains.

I can't say that they ever 'removed them, but it is entirely possible. Also, many roundhouses had switched approaches vice turntables. There would be a main lead, a switch with a straight, and two diverging tracks, and any of the diverging tracks could also have another switch so that multiple approaches could be made. It would take up more room than a table, and offer no advantages of the table.

Does anyone know if prototype RR's have even removed a turntable from a roundhouse and still used the roundhouse. Would they installed a 3 way switch?
Thanks
