Generally, the conveyor shield will have a portal of sorts built around it, and there would be a side door to the outside built into the portal, with a set of stairs if necessary.

Ed,

If you don't get a response from anyone (other than this) on your inquiry, try posting on the "Prototype Information"or the "General" forum, too. The General Forum definitely gets the higher volumn of traffic.

Coal Mine Question
Posted by gmpullman on Saturday, April 23, 2005 7:42 AM
I'm finally getting around to placing my Walthers New River coal mine into position and have a question regarding how the covered conveyor enters the mountainside (adit?)... I've seen many photos of conveyor systems but I can't actually visualize how the mine entrance would look with the conveyor.
I'm thinking of using an N scale concrete tunnel portal with the conveyor inserted in it.
Was there an entrance there for employees or did they use another mine opening? I know most mines were accessed through a vertical lift but I'm not sure about the conveyor arrangement. Was it offset in the opening to allow vehicles to enter?
Thanks for your help... this is a great forum!
