I think its time that NMRA updated their clearance gauge to allow for "plate C" clearances. If you run any Superliners or double-stacks and you built your clearances with the gauge you'll be shearing off the tops of "excess height cars" like the New York Central did back in the 60s near Toledo. They rerouted a train with some tri-level auto racks and made all the Eldorado's on the top deck into convertibles!
Just east of Cleveland (and I assume there's one on the west side) CSX (Conrail) has an overhead structure that looks like a signal bridge but it has some sort of height measuring device to make sure there is height clearance for the "Cleveland Short Line" which is now the CSX main that has a series of tunnels. I guess certain combinations of containers exceed the clearance and this device is supposed to alert the dispatcher.

This should answer a lot of your questions including the instruction sheet for your NMRA gauge.http://www.nmra.org/standards/consist.html#standards

We have an NMRA tool-widget, but don't have any documentation with it. What are some of the things you can do with the n-scal version to provide proper clearance for buildings, tracks, tunnels, etc.
thanks
