Scenic Dividers
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, April 12, 2005 10:22 PM
I am in the middle of designing a multi-level around the walls HO layout. Does anyone have experience, pictures, or comments on the use and concept of the Iain Rice scenic dividers (also noted in the latest MRP). The layout will use multiple helixes to reach off-site staging and I would like to "break-up" some of the longer runs to enhance views, add operational opportunities, and create some vignettes. Many thanks.

Unless I'm mistaken, he uses a curved backdrop that come close to the front edge of the layout.. From what I gather from reading his series, he runs track through this "backdrop" using buildings, scenery, etc. to hide the transition joint. I know there are a series of transitional backdrops available from Walthers. Using these should work for you. And if the scene has buildings in it, use some fake front buildings (ala stage scenery) to blend the backdrops into the scene. I know I will be trying it with the rolling hills to city backdrops to blend into the small town that I am modeling.

Hello Mark,

When Marty McGuirk was on the "Model Railroader" staff, he was building a layout using this type of scenic divider. Where the dividing backdrops came out to the front edge of the layout, the fascia and valance essentially joined to mask the ends of the backdrops.

Although this type of scene division has many advantages, it also multiplies the "disappearing main line" problem, in that your main line has to realistically disappear from every scene twice. If you're okay with having lots of tunnel portals and highway overpasses that's fine, but it's something to consider.

Good luck,

Andy
