foam layout

i was consideing using foam as a base for my new layout. i was thinking of buying a foam knife and cutting out rivers and other things. i was wondering if it is a good idea and if it is how would i do it..any info would help thankyou!!!

I did my 5X9 layout in foam for weight & portability. You just need a good grid under it. Problems are under the table switch machines. You either have to connect them directly to the turnouts or mount them on a board and glue that to the foam. Good luck.

Yup, that's EXACTLY what I'm doing with mine. Works great.
