decoder and bachmann's n connie
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, March 23, 2005 8:30 PM
I'm working on installing a decoder in my 2-8-0 spectrum, using instructions
from Tony's web site. I'm using a Digitrax DZ-143 decoder (recomended by my LHS and digitrax web site) I got the engine apart, and looks like the decoder
is to large to fit. Anyone install a decoder in connie, and if so, how did it turn out, and what decoder did you use? Looking at Tony's I might have to either
send the loco to him, or get a lenz decoder......

I did a quick google search on installing a DZ-143 decoder. So far I found one site that shows installing a DZ-121. http://mywebpages.comcast.net/mjmx/bach280.htm
I went to Tony's web site to look at the instructions. Tony recommends the Lenz LE010XF or LE077XF. Tony also says the "Digitrax DZ 121 and DZ120 s are TOO LONG to fit the boiler shell WITHOUT FRAME MODIFICATION" and he does not recommend it.
A DZ-143 measures .36" X .55" X .13"
A CZ-121 measures .36 X .575" X .16"
A Lenz LE010XF measures .36" X .51" X .14"

So you are correct that the decoder is too long. It would be a better idea to get the Lenz decoder instead of cutting the frame. Save the Digitrax for another instalation.

I came across that web site also. looks like a nice install, but the only thing
I found, the loco he was installing the decoder on was the HO version of the
connie. I was thinking so close but soo far....
working with this engine, i'm deffenty going to buy my atlas from Tony's with
the decoder installed. I'n not quit ready to give up on this one yet....
thanks
Chris
