NO derailing

I've never had a big layout, but ,am I doing something wrong? In 40 years of O ,HO, and 4 in N gauge, my ONLY problem with derailment comes from one single 25 year old atlas N switch that my uncle gave me. (and this is seldom) Never any problems with track, even the stuff that came with my daughters Bachmann 4-4-0 frontiersman set ! She is 8 now and runs hers (and my atlas gp7's) at 200+mph scale! Like I said , I've never had a fancy or big layout, but derailments have never been an issue...am I cursed? WHAT are the reasons for derailments?...again, great layouts & photo's people!!! Doug, does that loco derail in the same place, or at least under the same circumstances? I would start with that reasoning and expect to find that there is a disparity between that loco's wheel guage and the track's guage, especially if other locos, both old and new, don't encounter that problem.

Could the centre of gravity be altered and it 'falls' over our out of curves? Is that loco somewhat heavier than the others, enough to deflect the switch points over-wide? Are the points sharp enough and do they lie flat enough against the outer rails on each side?

Otherwise, ya got me.

I should be so cursed. Bacteria on the track would derail my N Scale stuff. How about coming up to Lake Placid and doing some track laying for me?

Doug, the first question to ask, does your layout have other switches and does this locomotive go through them without problems? If the same switch and only this switch causes the problem, even infrequently, I'd just replace it.
