DCC wiring?
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, March 11, 2005 3:37 PM
Hello!
I have one question. I don't know if my track plan will work with dcc or not. If so, would I have to add a reverising module?
To check the picture, please visit my site at: http://www.geocities.com/trainman220002000/drgw5505.html It is under "The Layout."

Zach.

I think you'll need to take the (.) out at the end of the link. The layout isn't viewable otherwise.

Tom

P.S. Found the link under your signature. The pic is a bit too small to make out the details though.

I guess the simple answer is yes!

I too have a hard time reading the track plan, but if you have a Y or a turntable, or a loop that reverses back on itself, you will need some sort of reverse loop control. The main brands of DCC all have reverse modules of differing types and there are several other manufacturers making them as well. www.wiringfordcc.com is an invaluable resource for information when considering what you want to do.

I enlarged that image and through the blur I made out what looks to be a very obvious reversing loop. If you convert to DCC you can run it with a single DPDT switch or you can put an autoreverser in which is the same thing but automatically. The digitrax AR1 can be had for 21 dollars or so. if there are any other reversing sections I would reccomend reversing modules or DPDT switches for each. You can run more than one off of a single unit but you have to make sure only one train tries to exit at a time.

Even with DCC reverse loops require a change in polarity to return to the original track. The nice thing about DCC is that you can change the polarity under the locomotive and the locomotive continues to run as if nothing has happened. The reverse loop has to be a separate block. You can wire it in the same manner you wire a DC reverse loop with a DPDT switch or use an automatic reverser. If you use the DPDT, reverse the polarity of the loop while the train is in the loop and the polarity will match when the train exits the loop.
